Toss The Old & Organize The New:
- Take everything out of the car, including car seats, music, and miscellaneous items stored in the glove box and door pockets.

The sun is shining again and summer is right around the bend, so the chances that you’ll be hitting the road to enjoy it all are pretty high. And regardless if you’re traveling near or far, the chances that you end up seeing one of those orange signs that let you know road work is up ahead are pretty high too. We here at Fiore Volkswagen know, it can be frustrating because it slows down your travels, but summer is the best time for construction so you’re going to run into it. With that being said, this week we have some safety tips for driving through a work zone. If you’re thinking you might not need them, just think about how many accidents can happen if you’re going too fast through a work zone. With people working right next to your vehicle and other machinery at work, there are more road hazards to be aware of. If you’re going too fast, injury or worse could happen to the workers, other drivers, or you and your passengers. So check out our tips below and see how important it is to slow down this summer!
Fiore Volkswagen’s Safety Tips For Work Zones:
Increase your following distance:
- You should have three car lengths in front of you when entering a construction zone. I know you might think this is extensive but give yourself more room leaves space in case of an accident like a worker stepping out too far or even something falling in the road!
Don’t assume workers are present:
- A lot of the time you’ll see signs that tell you to reduce your speed because you are approaching a work zone, but once you get there it looks like nobody is working…so most people accelerate to normal speed. Regardless if you don’t see the worker or not, obey the speed limit. Workers could be working farther up, and even if they’re not working a cop could still be monitoring the area just waiting for someone to break the law!
Follow instructions from flaggers:
- Always obey instructions from flaggers, and assume that their instructions overrule any other traffic signs or signals. Their directions might not align with normal traffic patterns, so be prepared. Also, be on the lookout for flaggers’ signals, such as an extended palm indicating that you need to stop. Be sure to also reduce your speed and be especially aware of your surroundings when driving near a work zone with flaggers posted.
Minimize your distractions:
- Distraction-free driving is always important, but especially during work zones! When you are approaching a work zone, slow down, turn down any loud music, and stay focused on your surroundings. The more attentive you are the less likely you will be to have an accident!
Merge promptly at land closure:
- One of the most common causes of accidents and road rage in construction zones is that of lane closures. When you see a sign posted for an upcoming lane closure, be sure to merge as soon as safely possible. Do not wait until the lane is coming to an end to force your way over into the next lane. This is not only rude to the other drivers who followed the posted signs and merged but it could cause a road rage incident.

Remove the winter tires
- This might be an obvious one, but many of us live fast-paced lives and we either forget or put it off as long as we can. But the truth is, leaving your winter tires on during the whole year can actually cause a lot of damage and even be dangerous. Once it looks like the coast is clear and we won’t be getting any more snow, set a day to change out
Wash car’s exterior
- Wash and wax your vehicle’s exterior to get rid of dust, dirt, and salt that has built up during the winter. Don’t forget to clean the tires, headlights and underneath for a full cleaning! If you’re not one to roll up your sleeves, no problem! A full-service car wash will do the same and usually isn’t too much money.
Clean the trunk
- Our truck is basically our closet on the go. We tend to throw a lot of useless stuff in there and then when we need to use it, we find that there is no room. Well, it’s time to rip off the bandaid and take everything out. Yes, I mean everything! Make a keep and throwout pile, whatever you don’t need in your vehicle be sure to bring it inside and not to put it back in your trunk. Make some space for new things and don’t forget to shake the trunk carpet liner.
Clean the interior
- Don’t have a clean exterior and a messy interior, it’s dangerous to have your floors covered in clutter and you’ll feel better when your vehicle is cleaned up. You should also check under the seats and vacuum all the dirt and dried salt. Don’t ignore your vehicle’s seats. Make sure you don’t use any chemicals, which can cause damage, and rub the seats with a wet cloth instead. For more info on what to use, just check your owner’s manual.
Look under the hood
- Under the hood is where the heart of your vehicle lives. Make sure that it is clean and nothing is trapped inside is important. A clean engine prolongs the life of your engine as well as prevents any further mechanical issues. Clean your engine components with soap and water and be sure to wipe down your engine till it’s dry. Never work under the hood in the engine is hot!
