When the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team arrived in Las Vegas for the final race of the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross (GRC) season they knew that they would be leaving with a championship due to their large lead in points over the other teams. What remained to be seen, however, was whether either of the team’s two drivers Scott Speed and Tanner Foust would secure the win with a podium finish in the championship race. At the end of the weekend, it was Speed, who pilots the No. 41 ORAFOL Volkswagen Beetle GRC, that drove home the official win.

“I’m at a loss for words when it comes to describing how it feels to win the championship this season,” said Speed, soon after crossing the finish line in Vegas. “The whole Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team has worked so hard for this result; I’m incredibly proud of this team and am so happy to have been able to bring home the top spot for them.”

Teammate Foust who pilots the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Beetle came in ninth place during the final race, but finished third overall for the entire series giving both drivers a podium finish. This win not only adds to Foust’s already impressive GRC resume, but it was also a big win for the entire Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team to come away with a championship in only their second year of competition.

“It was a difficult event here in Las Vegas, but I’m so proud of the entire VARX team for the efforts they’ve put in this year. They’ve made our season so, extremely successful,” states Foust.“Third in the championship obviously isn’t what we were hoping for, but I can’t wait to start next year, continuing the success we’ve found in 2015.  Congratulations to Scott—I’m glad he could join the GRC champions club, but we’ll be gunning for him next year!”

MotorWeek’s Retro Reviews are a fun look into the past with regards to automobiles. If you’ve never watched one of these short videos you are in for a treat today! This episode takes a look at the 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon and its unique design and features.

The design of the Vanagon was very European for the time most notably by having the front seats directly over the front wheels. A feature that American drivers had to get used to in terms of driving and handling. Because of the wheel placement the vehicle had a very short turning radius, but because of it’s boxy shape, the Vanagon could be difficult to handle in a crosswind. You might also be wondering where the engine is, since there is clearly no room in the nose of the Vanagon. The engine is actually located in the rear of the van underneath the storage area. The battery is located in a compartment under the front passenger’s seat. It was similar in size to many of it’s contemporaries and offered a starting price around $12,000. To see the Vanagon in action simply watch the video below!

In the more than six decades since the iconic Volkswagen Beetle was first introduced it has continued to be one of the most popular models in the brand’s lineup. A big part of what gave this model such instantaneous sales success in the U.S. was the long-running advertising campaign that the brand ran for this model that highlighted the affordability, unique, compact design, and uncomplicated build of the Beetle.

Over the years, the brand’s advertisements have continued to help promote the success of this popular model, but it was this classic ads from back in the day that truly helped to catapult the Beetle’s initial success.

Recently, a number of vintage VW advertisements were released on the King Rose Archives Youtube channel, a channel dedicated to releasing classic automobile footage and ads. Check out the video below to see one of the first ads that helped to launch the success of this model.
