It’s a new year and Volkswagen is looking to start this year off on a fresh positive note following the many ups and downs of 2015. To start off, the brand’s total sales results for January came to a total of 20,079 units with several of their models experiencing their best-ever monthly sales. The biggest sellers for January included the Tiguan, Golf R, and the e-Golf which all reach record-breaking totals.

“We are encouraged by the strong performance of the Tiguan,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “January sales numbers were down due to the seasonal nature of the fleet business. Despite that and the weather conditions in the Northeast portion of the country, Volkswagen dealers improved in terms of retail business.”

January Sales:

  • Sales of the Golf R reached 447 units
  • Sales of the e-Golf increased by 81 percent to reach 328 units
  • Sales of the Golf SportWagen reached 706 units
  • Sales of the Jetta Sedan reached 8,175 units
  • Sales of the Tiguan increased by 71.6 percent to reach 2,528 units

Popular automotive research company, Kelley Blue Book has reviewed the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune on their website. They overview the history of the Beetle Dune, which was inspired by the Baja Bugs, an off-road racing Beetle from the 1960s. KBB calls the Dune a “throwback with style” due to its retro touches like running boards and black wheel arches, which make the car look “muscular and ‘70s cool.”

Kelley Blue Book also got to test drive the VW Beetle Dune in Las Vegas. They were impressed by the Dune’s 1.8-liter turbo four cylinder engine and remarked that the six-speed automatic transmission was a perfect match, making for a sporty handle and a firm but pleasant ride. Additional upgrades for the Dune include available Park Distance Control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a rearview camera.

While the new Volkswagen all-electric BUDD-e microbus may have been the vehicle debut that most Volkswagen enthusiasts were anticipating for the 2016 CES, it was not the only new Volkswagen concept vehicle to make its debut recently. This week, the brand is attending the 2016 Detroit Auto Show and they debuted their new Tiguan GTE Active concept.

This dynamic concept is based off the design of the 2017 Tiguan, but is an all-wheel-drive hybrid version. It is powered by a 221 horsepower engine paired to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back to create a new “electric driveshaft.”

Every journey in this vehicle begins in all-electric E-Mode and it will continue in that mode for about 20 miles until the batteries run out of juice, at that point, the hybrid mode will kick in.

Some of the features that come standard on this vehicle include a 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and climate controls that can both be operated through gesture control. This model is also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Each year at CES, automotive companies unveil a variety of new technology and vehicle concepts that impress and amaze attendees. This year, Volkswagen impressed visitors with their latest concept vehicle, the BUDD-e.

Right off the bat, the 373-mile all-electric range was enough to catch people’s attention, but one quick peek into the driver’s seat to see the mobile interface that connects the driver to the world around them, and things got even more impressive.

No corners were cut when designing the exterior as well. The “Nevada White” and “Phoenix Copper” finish is easy on the eyes with its smooth and elegant finish. The interior takes things to the next level with a series of touchscreen displays both in the driver’s seat and in the back, that enable to passengers of the car to be more connected to the outside world than ever. You can even control features of the car by saying “Hello BUDD-e” followed by a phrase such as “turn the heat up a bit please”. It gets even more impressive though because BUDD-e can recognize where in the car the command came from and target the change to that specific area of the car.

When talking about the system, VW said, “With BUDD-e, passengers will be able to access their homes and workplaces to perform tasks such as controlling the air conditioning, turning lights on or off, or simply looking to see if their kids are home yet.” They also hope to simplify things even more by enabling BUDD-e to turn on house lights as it gets closer, reducing the need for homeowners to turn on their own lights.

For now, BUDD-e only a concept, however, we look forward to seeing where BUDD-e goes in the future and we hope to see in stores, sometime down the road.

With 2016 CES approaching quickly, manufacturers are all preparing to show off their latest innovations. Volkswagen is looking to make a comeback from it’s recent emissions issues, and win back many of its previously loyal drivers.

Although we don’t know how it will look, we do know Volkswagen will be showing off some concepts for “long-distance electromobility” and recently we’ve learned that it will be called “BUDD.e”.

For now, we can’t do much except wonder what will be to come and what will power this new concept vehicle. Regardless, we’d love to see BUDD.e head for production and even if it doesn’t, we love to see Volkswagen pushing back to re-establish its name and position.
