VW Unveils the I.D. Buzz Concept at the 2017 NAIAS

Volkswagen is kicking off the future of electric mobility with the debut of its newest electric concept called the I.D. Buzz, which premiered at the 2017 North American International Auto Show this week. The I.D. Buzz Concept encompasses the brand’s strategy for the next decade through four innovative pillars: Smart Sustainability, Automated Driving, Intuitive Usability, and a Connected Community.

“The I.D. BUZZ is a next-generation vehicle based on the new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), offering comfort and plenty of space,” says Dr. Frank Welsch, Volkswagen Member of the Board of Management responsible for Development. “The overall concept of the I.D. BUZZ points the way to the future. This concept vehicle is the world’s first electric multi-purpose vehicle to be equipped with a fully autonomous driving mode. It carries the feeling of freedom of the Microbus over to a completely new era of mobility.”

This next-generation electric vehicle features a zero-emissions all-wheel drive system that produces 369 horsepower and an estimated electric driving range of 270 miles. Drivers will also be able to switch from manual control to autonomous driving through the “I.D. Pilot” mode. The I.D. Buzz Concept also offers drivers extreme personalization through Volkswagen User-ID which can store your personal seat, air conditioning, light, and sound system settings along with favorite radio stations and contact information. The I.D. Buzz Concept also features a large interior for comfort and relaxation, plus it bares quite a resemblance to the beloved VW Type 2 “Microbus” of the 1950s and 1960s.
