MotorWeek’s Retro Reviews are a fun look into the past with regards to automobiles. If you’ve never watched one of these short videos you are in for a treat today! This episode takes a look at the 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon and its unique design and features.

The design of the Vanagon was very European for the time most notably by having the front seats directly over the front wheels. A feature that American drivers had to get used to in terms of driving and handling. Because of the wheel placement the vehicle had a very short turning radius, but because of it’s boxy shape, the Vanagon could be difficult to handle in a crosswind. You might also be wondering where the engine is, since there is clearly no room in the nose of the Vanagon. The engine is actually located in the rear of the van underneath the storage area. The battery is located in a compartment under the front passenger’s seat. It was similar in size to many of it’s contemporaries and offered a starting price around $12,000.
