Making sure you make it from point A to point B  safely is the utmost importance when a winter storm rolls in. That’s why this week I want to help prepare you for the winter months ahead of us, and for any long distance traveling you might be doing in the next couple of weeks for the holidays. If you are traveling for the holiday, you are not the only one. In fact, Christmas is one of the most traveled holidays, and if you are hitting the road to get to your destination you might hit that dread snow. If this is the case we want to help prepare you and make sure that you make it to your destination safely and stress-free. The best way to do that is learning some tips and tricks for taking on any all weather conditions you might run into. Before you hit the road it is extremely important that your vehicle is in tip-top shape and able to make it through the winter weather you might hit. If you think your vehicle might need to be serviced before you hit the road, bring it into our state of the art service center and our professionals would love to help you out!

Driving In The Snow:

  • Snow can fall in different ways actually causing different driving issues
    • Large, wet snowflakes can pile up quickly and cause slippery road surfaces.
    • Small, light snowflakes can obscure visibility and build ice on windshields and other surfaces.
  • In order to make it to your destination safely, we suggest driving slow. If this means leaving early, plan accordingly. It is better to wake up early and be safe then run late and get hurt.
  • Secondly, we suggest increasing your following distance. Even in light snow, braking ability can be severely impaired. Your vehicle can take up to double the distance to stop in snow compared to dry conditions.
  • We also suggest driving with your lights on, making yourself visible is important to both your own safety and other drivers.

Driving On Ice:

  • Icy conditions can be treacherous, and black ice can be our worst nightmare. The prime times for black ice to occur are at dawn and late evening when temperatures are coolest. Black ice can form when the air is at 32 degrees or below at the surface and rain is falling
  • Driving on ice can become very slippery because tires have nothing to grip to. The best way to avoid sliding is to drive very slow and keep an eye on the road! If you find yourself sliding on ice remember these tips
    • Don’t panic.
    • Don’t slam on the brakes.
    • Take your foot off the gas.
    • Steer your car in the direction you want to go.
    • Wait for the car to slow down and the wheels to catch so you can regain control.
  • Make sure that you give other drivers plenty of space in case they cannot come to a controlled stop.

You’re headed out to work or to meet up with your friends and you see something leaking out of your car! You start to panic and think that you’re going to be late or have to take your vehicle in to have it serviced! Well, don’t worry that’s not always the case! Check out Fiore Volkswagen’s color guide to your vehicles leaking fluid so you can diagnose the issue with ease! And in the unfortunate event that the leak is something serious, conveniently schedule your service appointment at Fiore Volkswagen’s Service Center today!

Fiore Volkswagen’s Color Guide To Fluid Leaks

Clear:

  • This is usually water from the air conditioning building up excess condensation and resulting in puddles of water underneath your vehicle. Unless this problem persists in great quantities, you’ve got nothing to worry about!

Yellow, Green, or Pink:

  • Due to their bright colors, these leaks are usually easy to spot. If your vehicle is an older model and there are only a few spots here and there it’s not something to worry about. But, if there are larger puddles of this fluid or your vehicle is newer, this coolant shouldn’t be dripping any excess liquids so it might be a good idea to bring it in to a professional.

Orange:

  • If there is orange/reddish-brown fluid leaking from the center of your vehicle, it could be transmission fluid. However, rust from your radiator mixing with an antifreeze leak can appear orange-ish as well, but can leak from multiple spots so placement is a key determining factor with this one.

Red(ish):

  • Power steering fluid appears red in color with a thin texture and will leak from under the front part of your car. If this is the case, there is an issue with the power steering pump and you should seek out a service professional.

Light yellow to dark brown:

  • Brake fluid starts out as a clear/yellow color and as it ages it becomes dark brown, similar to motor oil. Distinguish between the two by dipping your finger in it. If the fluid feels slippery, it’s likely brake fluid. If this is the case, your vehicle is not safe to drive and you’re going to want to have it towed it in for repair as soon as possible.

Light brown to black:

  • If the fluid leaking from your vehicle is a brownish/black color with an iridescent hue, chances are its motor oil. This can leak from various spots of your vehicle and won’t stop your vehicle dead, but it means that there is an ongoing issue and you should bring your vehicle in for a professional examination

Fall is here and conditions are changing pretty rapidly. Sometimes those conditions come with wet and muddy situations and in some cases, you might find yourself stuck in the mud. And if you do find yourself here, do you know how to get your vehicle back on the road and out of the mud? If not, we have you covered because this week we’re diving deep into the mud (just kidding) but we are focusing on how to free your vehicle from the muck. Check it out below and as always, be careful out there on the roadway! No one wants to get stuck so if you see mud, beware!

Fiore Volkswagen’s Tips For Avoiding Getting Stuck In The Mud:

  • If you feel your vehicle beginning to sink or becoming stuck – don’t stop. Continue a constant pressure on the gas pedal. Hopefully, this will be the only thing you need to do to get out of the mud. You’ll want to avoid bringing your vehicle to a complete stop, your vehicle will be stuck and you’ll have to take other extensive measures to get out. Sorry, Charlie!
  • Rock it back and forth – literally. Once you’re stuck, you’re stuck and it’s time to do some maneuvering. While gently pressing on your gas pedal, shift between drive and reverse. This will begin to create a rocking motion and may free your vehicle. If you’re not free after a few times, move on.
  • Adding traction increases your chances of getting unstuck greatly. Whether you are willing to use your floor mats, blankets, extra clothing you have in your vehicle or random items like leaves, sticks or rocks – traction is the reason you’re stuck and you need to regain that traction to get out of the mud. Place your items in front of your tires and slowly accelerate. If you have a few passengers, asking them to push might be a good idea!
  • Dig it out! If you keep a small shovel in your vehicle, you’re a genius. If not, you’re probably part of the majority. Regardless, you want to try to dig out the mud from around your tires and try to create a clean, clear path back to solid ground. Once your path is clear, hop in and gently accelerate. If this doesn’t seem to work, it might be time to phone a friend!

It’s officially October and that means it’s time to get into the Halloween spirit! Decorating for Halloween is a blast, not to mention a great opportunity for creative expression. Your house and yard are obvious sites for decoration, but don’t neglect your car! Whether you’re going to a trunk or treat, Halloween event, or you just want to drive around in style, start by picking a theme that speaks to you. Then, with craft supplies, decorations, and inspiration, you can bring your creation to life!  Don’t forget to consider safety if you’re taking your festive ride on the road. Check out Fiore Volkswagen’s Halloween decorating tips for your ride below and really enjoy this upcoming spooky season!

Fiore Volkswagen’s Halloween Decorating Tips:

Pick a theme

  • This is your time to get creative. Pick a theme that speaks to you. Consider your favorite cartoon characters, movies, and Halloween decor. The options are endless

Choose road safe decorations

  • If you’re planning on driving your car, it is important to ensure that your decorations are safe for other drivers on the road! Road-safe decorations shouldn’t obstruct your view or other drivers’ views. They should be well secured, and shouldn’t block mirrors or windows.

Get creative with stationary vehicles

  • If you are planning on leaving your vehicle stationary, then your decoration ideas are endless and there are no boundaries! Trunk or treat events, in which participants decorate their open car trunks and assemble in a parking lot for some trick or treating, are great opportunities to go all out on decorating a stationary vehicle

DIY decorations to save some money

  • You don’t have to break the bank to have a great design! If you’re feeling creative, you can make many of your decorations with household items like construction paper, cardboard, and styrofoam.

Coordinate your costume with your vehicle

  • Coordinating your costume to your vehicle can be the perfect way to pull together a spooky or cute family ensemble!
